Immigrant to Industry Icon: Our Story

commercial-office-cleaningIn 1959, Irish-born immigrant Carl Shanahan Sr. reached American shores with $2.50 to his name, and dreams of new opportunities and prosperity for his family. The Shanahans settled in Stamford, CT. and Carl soon found work, first with Pitney Bowes and then CBS Technology, successfully establishing a professional career and family roots.

The entrepreneurial spirit captured Carl’s imagination as Stamford entered a period of economic growth, attracting corporate giants like Xerox, American Thread, Champion International, American Tobacco, General Electric, GTE, Union Carbide, Fortune Brands, Oxford Health and others. The time had come to start his own venture.

Building on his vision of serving the large and growing cluster of corporate headquarters, Carl prepared to launch a cleaning company. He shared a list of ideas for naming the business with twenty co-workers who unanimously voted to honor his Irish heritage; the Shamrock brand won the day.

In 1969, Carl’s company landed Xerox’s new HQ as an anchor client and by the early 1990’s, Shamrock was servicing over 80% of the corporate headquarters in Fairfield County. During this period, Carl Jr. and brother Kevin joined the family business, continuing to build and expand resources and geographic range, driven by a reputation for integrity and service excellence.

With additional corporate offices in St. Petersburg, Florida, Shelton, Connecticut, Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and Wilmington, this family-owned commercial office cleaning company, now Shamrock Clean, continues its decades-long record of dedication to employees and client-partners.

From our humble beginnings in the 1960’s, to a national commercial office cleaning service provider in the 21st century, we look ahead with gratitude, humility, and a ubiquitous commitment to excellence.
